About Oakman School- AER Report

Oakman Elementary is a two story k-5 building covering 46,700 square feet and is located at 7545 Chase Road in Dearborn, Michigan. Oakman was built in 1926 and services under 300 students. Oakman faculty is comprised of all female teachers with the exception of the physical education teacher. Additionally all staff are deemed highly qualified, meeting the state and federal licensing requirements with ten staff members’ possessing ELL and three ZA endorsements. All Staff continues receiving SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) training and ongoing quality professional development aimed at improving instructional services. Oakman’s dynamic staff uses state of the art technology and best instructional practices to educate all students.

Nine students or approximately 3 percent of students receive special education services, 95 percent of Oakman students are categorized as ELL, students having a native language other than English. Approximately ninety-four percent of Oakman students receive a free or reduced lunch and are categorized as economically disadvantaged (ED). Arabic is the primary home language for a majority of Oakman Elementary families.

Oakman Elementary is located in the Oakman Groves neighborhood home to the most densely concentrated Arab-American population in the United States. Local businesses consist of restaurants, medical offices, mom and pop markets, auto repair and maintenance garages, bakeries, butcher shops, bookstores, clothing stores and mosques creating a vibrant business district within the Dearborn community. Warren Avenue represents the microcosm of Middle Eastern culture and traditions. Many Oakman families are first generation Arab-Americans coming by way of refugee status and fleeing the war torn Middle East.
