Oakman Lions are you ready for another math challenge? For this week all you will need is a deck of cards and someone to play with.
Kindergarten- Send a picture playing “Kindergarten Addition Battle.” Divide the deck into two piles. Keep the cards face down. At the same time, players turn over 2 cards from their pile. Players add the value of their cards to get a sum. The player with the higher sum wins the battle round and keeps all of the cards. The winner of the game is the one who gets all the cards in the deck.
1st Grade- Send a picture playing “1st Grade Addition Battle.” Divide the deck into two piles. Keep the cards face down. At the same time, players turn over 3 cards from their pile. Players add the value of their cards to get a sum. The player with the higher sum wins the battle round and keeps all of the cards. If the sums are equal, the cards are placed in a center pile. The next hand is played as normal and the winner takes all of the cards from that round and the previous tie. The winner of the game is the one who gets all the cards in the deck.
2nd Grade- Send a picture playing “Close Call.” Each player will get 6 cards. Players then select 4 of the cards to create two 2-digit numbers. The goal is to create two numbers that when added together come as close to 100 as possible, without going over. For example, if I selected the cards 2,3,4, and 5. I was then able to create the numbers 53 and 42, which when added together total 95. The player with the total closest to 100 wins the round.
3rd Grade- Practice your multiplication facts! Send a picture playing “Multiplication War.” This is a 2 player game. Start off by removing the Jacks, Kings and Queens from a regular deck of cards and place cards face down in 2 piles. At the count of three, both players flip over their first card. The first person to say the product of the 2 cards receives both cards and puts them in a separate pile. If both players say the answer at the same time, the cards are put in the middle of the table. The next player to win the “flip” gets the cards in the middle of the table in addition to the cards just played. Or you could have a third person be the judge. The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of play.
4th and 5th Grade- Send a picture playing “Declare a Fraction War.” This can be a 2 or more player game. To start Shuffle and deal the cards. Each player puts their cards faced down in a pile. Both players turn over two cards at the same time. You can use a pencil to place one above the pencil (numerator) and one below (denominator). You will determine whose fraction is the largest. The person with the largest fraction keeps all four cards. You will continue playing until all cards are gone.
