Read by 3rd Grade Law

Based on Public Law 306 (October 2016), third grade students who are more than a year below grade level on the state ELA assessment are under consideration for retention in third grade.  Dearborn Public Schools staff in elementary schools have been systematically planning to ensure that teachers have the training to teach reading effectively and that students receive small group instruction based on their needs.  The current year second graders are the first group to potentially be impacted by the legislation.

You are invited to join the district task force to strengthen the planning process and to ensure that the community is informed and engaged in the success of every student.

If you would like to participate, please complete the survey.

Email addresses will be required to send confirmation and changes/reminders after the first of the year.

What’s Happening This Week?

Greetings Oakman Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by all your loved ones. We are thankful for our Oakman family and the time we spend together.

In the next few weeks before the holiday vacation, it is crucial that all students continue working towards their goals, read everyday and put forth their best effort during each school day. Reading daily has countless benefits and is a great habit to form. It should now be a regular part of every student’s daily routine and can be tailored to fit students’ needs and interests. Please reach out to any teacher if you need help with tips or resources.

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

This weekend, our Oakman Lions First LEGO League team competed in one of the state events for Later Elementary in Monroe County ISD. Our team showed resilience and true team spirit during the competition. We are so proud of our students and THANKFUL to all the parents who helped support the team. Kudos to our coaches Mrs. McMahon, Ms. Puente, and Ms. Mosed for guiding our student to problem solve and collaborate. Also special thanks to Susan Hicks, engineer, for helping and supporting the team through programming to complete the required missions, and to Ms. Logel for being on-site to support the team. WAY TO GO OAKMAN SCHOOL!

This week marks the importance of expressing gratitude and appreciation for others. It also means spending time with family and friends AND eating a lot of delicious foods. This Thanksgiving, enjoy your gatherings and take the time to reflect on being THANKFUL.
